Does your child play Fortnite and you don’t really know what is so fun about it? We explain what Fortnite is, so you can play a round yourself too!
Fortnite (in full: Fortnite Battle Royale) has 125 million players and is a huge success worldwide. And the game has not even been released for Android yet, the world’s largest smartphone operating system. What has made Fortnite such a success?
To start with, the game is free. But it is also suitable for a large group of players (PEGI 12), because no blood splatters across the screen. You start a round with 100 players and play until one of them wins. Anyone who is shot then watches along with the shooter, until eventually one of the hundred players wins and earns eternal glory. When you are injured, teammates can heal you with bandages or medicine. V-Bucks are the official currency in the game, used for example to buy a new outfit. Although Fortnite is a shooting game, it is a friendly variant, a kind of hide-and-seek. A reassuring thought for parents.
Perhaps the most important reason for its success is that players can form squads: they try to win the game with a group of friends. The game is a hunt. For opponents, but also for loot, which is hidden everywhere.
To keep the tension high, the playing area shrinks during every game because of a deadly storm that covers a larger part of the island each time. Another nice feature is that players can build their own structures to take cover and get a view of the surroundings, a bit like in the earlier hit Minecraft.
Fortnite dance challenge
There is some silliness in it too, such as the dances players can do (and which their football heroes regularly show on the pitch). A whole cult has already grown up around these dances on YouTube: the Fortnite Dance Challenge.
Here, Dutch teacher ‘Meester Sander’ explains it (video in Dutch):
